Reduce costs of domian renewals for ~60 domains

Was chatting about domain ownership with a friend who it turns out has quite a decent collection (for a hobbyist)...he has around 60 domains and estimates he spends 300-400USD per year for renewals.

Beyond pouncing on renewals offers, are there any legit/legal methods for reducing his renewal costs? Any experiences/pointers/tips/links appreciated.

EDIT: forgot to say, he has them with Gandi and Godaddy currently
